New Plans for Former Debenhams Building

Hull’s former Debenhams store on Prospect Street — vacant since its closure in May 2021 — could soon be seeing a new lease of life. Property developer DBG Group has officially acquired the landmark building, with plans to redevelop the site and breathe new energy into this key city centre location.

Covering more than 180,000 sq. ft, the former department store sits between Ferensway and the Prospect Centre, making it a crucial piece of Hull’s urban puzzle. Its future has been the subject of much local curiosity, and this new development marks a major step forward.

DBG Group called the purchase a “significant milestone” and teased that ambitious plans are in motion. While they haven’t yet confirmed the building’s final purpose — whether it will remain retail, become residential, or take on a mixed-use role — they emphasised their commitment to transforming the space and “bringing it back to life.”

A formal planning application is expected in the coming months, offering more clarity on the vision for the site. Until then, the announcement alone signals a fresh opportunity for Hull’s city centre to continue its evolution.
